Almost Oshkosh Time

Its that time of year again – the annual pilgrimage to Airventure is almost upon us. As a Wisconsin resident this isn’t quite such a trek for me as for many other people but its a summer fixture that we all look forward to. I spent a few hours at the EAA museum last weekend, I was passing through and thought I would beat the rush. The port-a-potties are lining up in the camp ground and the Airventure 2005 merchandise is already on sale in the museum shop. They have a interesting dinosaur exhibit sure to grab the attention of young and old alike though I really needed my two-year old son to be on hand to tell me what each dinosaur was as he is the family expert.

In reviewing the notam for Oshkosh I came across a very useful FAA site covering current TFRs (Temporary Flight Restrictions) that have a nasty habit of cropping up when you least expect them. The site is the FAA Graphic TFR’s and it provides a list of current and impending TFRs, broken down by date, state, region, and type of TFR (eg. Hazard, Security, Airshows, etc). In addition to the basic details they also provide graphical map of TFR’s across the country and a more detailed map for each individual TFR.

Interestingly I found out that there will be an airshow in Milwaukee this coming weekend – that this is the first I’ve heard of it doesn’t say much for the publicity machinery. If anyone is visiting the lakefront in Milwaukee on July 16/17th you will be able to see such things as A10s, F16s, F15s, P-51s; aerobatics by Jeff Mawhinney and Mike Goulian and watch the US Navy’s Blue Angels, see for more information.
